Roxy Striar & John Humphrey react to Coraline (2009), the acclaimed stop-motion dark fantasy from Laika Studios and director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach). Based on the Neil Gaiman novel, this visually stunning and hauntingly imaginative film tells the story of Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning – War of the Worlds, The Twilight Saga), a curious young girl who discovers a secret door in her new home that leads to an eerie “Other World” — one that seems perfect at first… until its sinister truth is revealed.
The film also stars Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) as both Mel Jones and the chilling Other Mother, Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick) as the flamboyant Mr. Bobinsky, Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) and Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley) as the eccentric retired actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, and Keith David (The Thing, Gargoyles) as the mysterious Cat.
Iconic and highly searched moments include the discovery of the tunnel to the Other World, Coraline’s button-eyed family reveal, the spider-like final showdown with the Other Mother, and the film’s mesmerizing stop-motion visuals that still captivate audiences today.
