Episode 94: Severe Penance of Raavan, Kumbhakarn and Vibhishan
The Ramayan – Stories of Dharm and Devotion
In our previous episode, we travelled far back into the ancient past to discover the origins of the Raakshas lineage. We followed the story from Pulastya to Vishravas, and then to Vaishravan, who would become known as Kuber, the Lord of Wealth and the righteous ruler of Lanka. We witnessed how the golden city passed from the Raakshas to Kuber, and how Sumali, forced into the netherworld, never forgot the kingdom his family had lost. His desire to reclaim Lanka eventually led him to his daughter Kaikasi and the great sage Vishravas. From their union were born four children, each carrying a very different destiny. Raavan, Kumbhakarn, Shurpanakha, and Vibhishan. We then saw the first spark of ambition within Raavan. When he witnessed the splendor of Kuber and the glory he had achieved, Raavan resolved that he would not remain beneath his half-brother He wanted the same power. And he wanted to go beyond it. So Raavan, together with his brothers, entered the forest to undertake a terrible penance.
In today's episode, we will witness what happened when their penance finally shook the heavens. We will see Raavan offer even his own heads to the sacred fire, while Kumbhakarn and Vibhishan pursue their own extraordinary paths of austerity. We will witness the arrival of God Brahma and discover the very different boons each brother receives, boons that will shape the destiny of Lanka and the worlds. But the story does not end with these boons. We will follow Raavan as he returns to Lanka and begins to build an empire through fear and conquest. We will see his marriage to Mandodari and the birth of his great ambition. We will witness his challenge to Kuber, the defeat of his own elder brother, and the moment when Raavan seizes the Pushpak Viman. And then, his journey will take him to Mount Kailash. There, his pride will bring him before Nandi, the devoted attendant of Lord Shiv. A curse will be spoken that will one day have a profound connection to Raavan's destruction. In his arrogance, Raavan will attempt to lift Mount Kailash itself. What follows will reveal another side of this extraordinary being. Trapped beneath the mountain, Raavan will turn from pride to devotion. He will praise Lord Shiv for a thousand years, and his devotion will move the Great God. It is there that Dashagreev will receive the name by which the world will remember him. Raavan. Join us as we witness the rise of one of the most powerful and complex figures in the Ramayan and discover how the boons that made Raavan almost invincible would also become the beginning of his downfall.
