“Information wants to be free” is not a slogan, it is a warning. Once your personal data leaks, there is no pulling it back, and AI is making breaches, scams, and mass surveillance faster, cheaper, and harder to avoid. We sit down with Ricardo Spagni, best known as Fluffy Pony and a former Monero contributor, to get brutally clear on what privacy actually is: the ability to selectively control what you reveal to specific people, companies, or the state.
From there, we pressure-test the arguments you hear every day. “Nothing to hide” sounds reasonable until you ask who else your choices expose, or what happens when the rules change. We talk about real-world stakes like domestic abuse, the slippery slope from monitoring speech to punishing intent, and why even “well-meaning” safety systems can become tools of coercion and false accusations. We also dig into the technology layer, including why TLS 1.3 mattered for internet encryption, why Apple’s resistance to backdoors set an important precedent, and why modern camera networks and AI tracking go far beyond simple licence plate recognition.
Then we get practical. Ricardo shares a simple 12-month privacy challenge: swap one service at a time for a more privacy-respecting alternative, improve everyday data hygiene, and reduce what you leak through convenience habits like live location posting. We also take on KYC head-on, why it is broken by design, how criminals route around it, and why the compliance burden lands on law-abiding people while databases keep leaking. If you care about digital privacy, cybersecurity, AI surveillance, and financial privacy in Bitcoin and Monero, this one will sharpen your thinking.
