Te Reo Māori Is Growing… But Here’s the Thing

Something for the People

About

More than 200,000 people can now hold a conversation in te reo Māori, up 15% since 2018.

But among Māori, the numbers tell a different story, with around 18.6% able to hold a conversation, almost unchanged over the past decade.

So what do the stats really tell us about the state of te reo?

In this kaupapa wānanga, we're lucky to be joined by Tākuta Rawinia Higgins, Chair of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, to talk about where te reo is at and what the numbers reveal.

PLUS, we’re talking Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Who is it really for? And how can everyday reo speakers make the most of this celebration of our reo?

Nau mai te wānanga! 🌿
