Episode 86: Horse Girls Brings Disability Representation to the Big Screen
Demand and Disrupt
Kimberly talks with Lillian Carrier and Matthew Schwab, stars of the film Horse Girls, which opened in select theaters during the summer. The movie is about Margarita, played by Carrier, who is a young woman with autism who lives with her mother Sandy (Gretchen Mol), who badly wants her daughter to get a job. Margarita's first steps toward independence begin when she spots a hobby horse rehearsal and becomes fixated on joining. Meanwhile, Sandy has been diagnosed with cancer and is trying to prepare Margarita to live on her own,. Both mother and daughter turn out to be keeping secrets from each other.
The movie employs disabled people to play disabled roles. It’s the kind of representation the disabled community has been waiting years for! Enjoy this candid conversation about disability representation, and movie making, and then tell everyone you know about Horse Girls.
