I once lived in a country where the government tried to silence my voice.

Today, I live in America - a country - where I can participate in choosing my representatives. I know the difference, and I will never take that freedom for granted.

I lived under Nicolae Ceaușescu's communist dictatorship in Romania.

As a young attorney, I defended Christians persecuted for their faith. I faced threats, interrogations, imprisonment, torture, and even an assassin sent to kill me.

The government wanted to silence me.

But my faith in God gave me the courage to stand for truth, justice, and freedom.

Today, as an American citizen, I understand something I could never take for granted:

The freedom to participate in our nation's future is a precious responsibility.

I know firsthand the devastating consequences of living under an authoritarian government. My experiences have shaped my lifelong commitment to religious liberty, human dignity, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

And I believe those experiences carry lessons worth sharing with the next generation.
