Personalized Treatment Strategies for Hyperkalemia: Bridging Evidence and Clinical Practice Needs

CME

About
Faculty: Ellie Kelepouris, MD, FACP, FAHA

This MinuteCE series examines practical approaches to hyperkalemia management in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart failure, diabetes, and other cardiorenal comorbidities. Through expert lectures, interviews, and case-based discussions, faculty review guideline-based strategies for managing hyperkalemia while maintaining or optimizing renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) therapy. The series compares oral potassium binders by mechanism of action, onset, tolerability, drug-interaction considerations, and sodium- or volume-related concerns. Faculty also address potassium monitoring, recurrent hyperkalemia, and factors that may influence treatment selection, including edema, CKD severity, diabetes, and concomitant therapies. Evidence from DIAMOND and relevant cardiology and nephrology guidelines is incorporated to support informed potassium binder selection and preservation of kidney- and cardiovascular-protective therapy.
