Dr. Peter Hammond on Protecting Cape Baboons and Creation's Call

He notes that opposition groups like the Green Group in Simon's Town, through spokesperson Carol Knox, argue the solution is simple: provide locals with baboon-proof trash cans rather than blaming the baboons for unsecured food. Dr. Hammond highlights the massive deforestation in the Cape Peninsula since 1994, estimating that ten million trees have been lost, which has shrunk the baboons' natural habitat and driven them to raid unsecured garbage bins. He points out that the baboon population has nearly doubled since 2000 while their habitat has shrunk, creating a recipe for conflict. He warns that removing baboons could endanger the Cape's UNESCO World Heritage Site status and notes that UNESCO is monitoring the situation closely. He also points out that the Western Cape Constitution provides for an independent Commissioner for the Environment, a post that has never been filled. Dr. Hammond argues that baboons are vital ecosystem engineers and critical seed dispensers, and that Scripture calls us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. He urges listeners to support the animal anti-cruelty leagues and SPCA, to insist on the appointment of the Commissioner for the Environment, and to protect these wild animals as part of our Christian responsibility.
