When Is It Time for Senior Living? A Family Guide to Making the Right Choice

Answers For Elders Radio Network

About

How do you know when Mom or Dad may need more help—and where do you begin when senior living becomes part of the conversation? On this episode of the Care & Crossroads Radio Show, host Daphne Davis, CEO of Pinnacle Senior Placements, welcomes Tina Hall of Era Living for an in-depth conversation about recognizing changes in an aging parent, starting difficult family conversations, understanding senior housing and care options, and finding a community that truly feels like home.

Daphne and Tina explore the warning signs families may overlook, from changes in housekeeping and nutrition to mobility, finances, driving and falls. They explain the differences between independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and adult family homes, and discuss why waiting for a crisis can actually reduce an older adult's choices and independence. You'll also learn what to look for when touring senior living communities, why staff experience and emotional support matter, what questions families should ask, and why the most beautiful building isn't necessarily the best home for the person you love.

In an extended aftershow conversation, Daphne and Tina take families even deeper into the decision-making process, including how a senior placement advisor or family advisor can help. They discuss trust, ethics, transparency, finances, family dynamics and the importance of understanding not only what an older adult needs, but what they want. Above all, this conversation is about planning proactively while Mom or Dad can still participate in the decision—so the next chapter can preserve dignity, independence, connection, purpose and quality of life.

Care & Crossroads is part of Answers for Elders Radio and airs the third week of each month. Listen Saturdays at 12:00 PM on AM 1000 | 97.7 FM Northwest Newsradio. The show is hosted by Daphne Davis of Pinnacle Senior Placements and helps older adults and their families navigate the crossroads of changing care needs, senior housing and life's important transitions.

Tina Hall has been with Era Living for 13 1/2 years, and in the Senior Housing and Care field for over 20 years, having also worked as a Community Relations Director in Assisted Living and as an Eldercare Advisor, educating and helping older individuals and their families understand the various types of housing and care options available, and how to access appropriate resources for whatever stage of life they are in. She is a former NEST Board member, a previous Senior Care Coalition Board president, and a very passionate advocate for seniors. Having lost her own father to Alzheimer’s disease, she understands what it is to struggle with balancing what we and our families want against what we may need as we age.
