Pernath is a man without a past, a cutter of stones, living in the Jewish Ghetto in the city of Prague and interacting with a strange cadre of individuals including the greedy and conniving Wastertrum, the maker of marionettes Zwakh, the fiery Rosina with morals as loose as her tongue, the wise and mysterious Hillel and his fetching daughter Miriam.
